Background and influences
After graduating and gaining early experience with a leisure group, Paul travelled the world extensively for four years, whilst working for British Airways, leaving to run his own successful graphic design business. He was also recruited into senior design management roles for leading below-the-line design & advertising agencies and gained four years consultancy experience, representing the High-technology Care division of Initial (BET / Rentokil Initial plc) working in new business development of blue-chip corporate accounts.
Paul returned intensively to drawing in 1999, painting professionally from January 2000, with his first solo show in 2001. Although his work is informed by his initial art & design education and design career background, he has also been influenced by more recent postgraduate studies in London. His painting style, subjects and studio practice methodologies have also been inspired by wide experience of travel, by landscapes, cities, books and films, as well as artists that include; Kandinsky, Saryan, Morandi, Hopper, Jasper Johns, Pollock, Rothko, Hans Hofmann, de Kooning and Slana.
